San Francisco (USA), February 5: American biopharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences on Thursday announced that it has joined the OneTen initiative, a new coalition aimed at bringing together leaders from some of the largest U.S. companies, to hire 1 million Black Americans over the next 10 years into family-sustaining jobs with opportunities for advancement.
Joining OneTen complements additional ongoing efforts to support racial equity and social justice, both through Gilead's internal efforts and external programs, the company said.
Through the company's Advancing Black Leadership Strategy, Gilead has introduced new programs to recruit, retain and advance employees at all levels of the company.
The company's external efforts include the 100 million U.S. dollars COMPASS Initiative and the Racial Equity Community Impact Fund, which started last year to provide financial support to organizations working to tackle racial inequities affecting Black communities across the United States, according to Gilead.
"Gilead is pleased to be part of this important commitment to hiring and promoting Black Americans," said Daniel O'Day, chairman and chief executive officer of Gilead. "Increasing diversity is not only the right thing to do, it also makes for more successful organizations."
The initiative was founded last year, and particularly focused on creating opportunities for individuals who do not yet have four-year college degrees and removing structural barriers that have hindered Black Americans from joining the middle class.
